Born in Rockenhausen, Germany, Würtz began playing piano at an early age and later taught himself guitar and bass, performing in various punk bands during his teenage years. In the early 1990s, he became increasingly interested in electronic music, acquiring his first sampler and an Atari ST and beginning to experiment with sequencing, electronic composition, and sound collage.

After studying Philosophy and Art History at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Würtz moved to London in 1995. He worked at Metropolis Recording Studios before returning to Germany in 1998, where he studied Audio Engineering at SAE Technology College in Berlin. From 1999, he worked in recording studios and post-production in Berlin, and in 2001 joined Audioforce Postproduktion as a Pro Tools operator and sound designer, composing music and creating sound for advertising and television.

Since becoming a freelance composer and sound designer in 2004, Würtz has worked on films, documentaries, advertising campaigns, art installations, and other moving-image projects. His credits include music and sound design for works directed by Luc Besson, Dante Ariola, Yves Geleyn, Alexander Herzog, and Peter Dörfler, as well as projects for Nike, the Royal Opera House London, and ARD. In 2006, he was a finalist in the Berlinale Talent Campus Score Competition.

A long-running collaboration with filmmaker Alexander Herzog developed into the audiovisual project Hänschenklein, in which music and image were conceived together rather than treating music simply as a soundtrack. Their work has been screened internationally, including at the Impakt Media Art Festival in the Netherlands.

Würtz has also released music under several names, including Hänschenklein, Ackou, and hÄK. His experimental work as hÄK explores noise, electroacoustic collage, musique concrète, modular synthesis, and DIY electronics. Self-built and modified instruments form an important part of this practice.

Since 2019, he has worked with drummer Philipp Danzeisen as the duo hÄK / Danzeisen, combining drums, electronics, and modular synthesis in an improvised and experimental setting.

Alongside his artistic practice, Würtz has taught and given lectures and workshops on sound design and music composition for moving image, including at Gaîté Lyrique in Paris and h_da Mediencampus Hochschule Darmstadt. He has also been involved in experimental music radio and collaborative projects with musicians and artists in Germany, France, and elsewhere.

He is based in Berlin.
